About

Anu Annam is a New York based South-Asian artist, born in India and raised in America. She has been passionate and dedicated to art since childhood–attracted to the qualities of perspective, color, dimension, shadow and composition. She trained herself in art at the age of five then later in life attended various art schools in New York City and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Massachusetts.

Anu concentrates on portraiture so as to be able to express her interest in countenances and emotions. Watercolor has been her media of choice for some time, due to its translucence and the spontaneous mixing that could occur due to the various properties found in its pigments.

She exhibits her fine art nationally and internationally and continues execute private commissions. She has become renowned for her rare ability to capture the emotions and auras of her subjects in her paintings.

Anu has exhibited her fine art paintings in many shows, including solo shows at Shrishti Art Gallery in Hyderabad, India, Le Salon d’ Art and The New York Open Center in Manhattan, NY and Jericho Public Library in Jericho, NY. She has also participated in group shows and art fairs including The National Art Gallery in Bangladesh and the Queens Museum of Art. As well as her watercolor portraiture, she is exhibiting her painting-meets sculpture watercolor collages, acrylics, oils and photographs.

An enthusiastic and dedicated Art Educator who works with children and adults in the US and India, Anu teaches and raises funds due to her belief in the importance of positive, individualized, art education. She began the “Art Center for the Children of Sphoorti” Benefit in 2009 to help bring the arts to impoverished and abandoned children in India, helping them to heal from their life on the dangerous streets. She is currently teaching “Watercolor Portraiture” for adults of all levels, “Splashes of Color” for children and “TBI Reintegration Art Class” for survivors of Traumatic Brain Injuries at the prestigious Art League of Long Island in New York. She also teaches classes and workshops at libraries and takes private students, schedule-permitting.

Curating art exhibitions for the vibrant community of artists in Manhattan and Long Island is something Anu began in 2010 with the Multicultural Arts Organization, Legros Cultural Arts, but is now continuing in a more concerted effort with her position as Curator at Campari Art House in Northport, NY which she began in 2013. Seeing her fellow artists’ work hung beautifully and shown in a warm setting to the public gives her much satisfaction and joy.
